SU reform in english

The Danish Parliament has on June 4, 2024 adopted a SU reform of the state educational grant system (SU) for higher education

On this page, you can read about the new rules of the SU reform regarding SU for higher education and private education.

You can get guidance at your educational institution on how to plan your higher educational programme with SU in relation to the new rules.

When and who?

The new rules come into effect on January, 1. 2027 and will apply for students who start a new higher education or private education programme on July 1, 2025 or later. A "new higher education" also refers to a master’s degree after completing a bachelor’s degree.

The current rules apply until January 2027, and you will be able to receive SU according to the same rules as today until then. However, you should already plan your SU according to the new rules. You may run out of educational grant portions (SU-klip) for higher education later on.

The new rules

The total number of educational grant portions a student can use for higher education (rammen), changes from 70 to 58 educational grant portions.

From 2027 you can receive educational grant portions (SU-klip) corresponding to the education’s prescribed duration in months (den normerede studietid).

You can no longer be granted 12 educational grant portions in addition to the standard time limit of your higher education program.

Example: If your educational programme is set to span 34 months, you can receive 34 educational grant portions – 1 educational grant portion (SU-klip) per month.

It will be possible to obtain a completion loan (slutlån) for a maximum of 24 months, if you run out of educational grant portions (SU-klip).

Students who receive a supplementary grant for physically or mentally disabled or a supplementary grant for single providers will be granted 12 extra educational grant portions in addition to the standard time limit.

The extra educational grant portions can be used if you are delayed in the study programme.

The total number of educational grant portions these students can use for higher education (rammen) will be 70 educational grant portions (58 SU-klip + 12 SU-klip).

The 12 extra educational grant portions for the students mentioned under point 4 will not count when we control your SU-activity requirement (according to the SU rules).
